Research done properly takes time. Someone who has never done any ancestry research themselves may think forty (40) hours is sufficient to research several generations. In fact, it may take weeks to fully investigate and document properly all of the information for those few generations. Investigating multiple original records takes time to ensure the authenticity of the information to be captured. There can be many situations where like-kinds of data are uncovered that require the researcher to thoroughly decipher the correct data to include in the project. At the end of the research time you select for our research, you should see progress in documenting information for your family ancestors. Keep in mind though it may take more than one research project to reach the amount of information you are seeking for your family tree.
Most typical research is divided into two types:
The first type and most common is the lineage or blood line for a specific surname like your father's or mother's family name. This type of research will document just the family members for a single surname back through each generation and will include the names of siblings and a wife's maiden name only for each family unit. A separate research project would have to be done for the wife's family surname. This is less time consuming that the second type of research.
The second type of research involves documenting multiple surnames in each family unit and can become very extensive and time consuming and require multiple projects and budgets. This type of research would include fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, cousins and so on for many generations. This type of project would be useful for family reunions to show "how we are all related" in a family.
